DUETS! Just The Two Of Us, BBC1, 8.30pm

Jo - she's got the flow...Right: this would be one of those programmes where we can't quite decide if it comes under the heading of LOWCULTURE or under the heading of "utter bilge". The thing is, despite our best efforts not to watch it, there's something horrifically compelling about it. By far the best thing, however, was last Friday morning when we saw Penny Smith on GMTV, and the production team's utter glee at replaying her performance every opportunity they got - which was approximately every thirty seconds. Penny's repeated disgruntled "oh, shut up" (whether this was directed to herself or to the production team, we were never quite sure) was comedy gold. Penny, we love you - and rest assured that no matter what happens, it is not even remotely possible for you to embarrass yourself in the same way that Fiona Phillips did on Strictly Come Dancing, so please take that to heart.

Comparisons with ITV's Soapstar Superstar are justified of course, but half of the fun in this show is seeing talented professionals like Jocelyn Brown and Beverley Knight slumming it with the novices in an attempt to raise their stars a little further into the stratosphere (not entirely successfully, since they've both been voted out now). We're not really sure who's going to win, and to be perfectly honest we're even less sure that we care; we're just enjoying the trashtastic ride.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
