Brothers in arms
SMOKIN'! Supernatural, ITV, 11.00pm
Somewhat bizarrely, we're doing our best to ignore the current ad campaign for one of our favourite new shows. It might have something to do with the fact that the "scary just got sexy" promotion for Supernatural is just the teensiest bit tacky. And by "just the teensiest bit", we mean "enormously". We're no strangers to tack here at LOWCULTURE, obviously - it's written right into our manifesto. It's important, however, to realise the distinction between classic, deliberate tackiness (such as the wonderful Footballers' Wives) and distracting, awkward tackiness (like that ad campaign).
It's a shame, really, because we're extremely fond of Supernatural. For those of you who haven't kept up with the show thus far, Sam and Dean Winchester lead an unconventional life. When they were children, their mother was attached to the ceiling of their house with an enormous slash across her abdomen and promptly incinerated. After that, their father kept disappearing. Then Sam had the worst kind of déjà vu, when he arrived home to find his girlfriend...wait for it...attached to the ceiling with an enormous slash across her abdomen before being incinerated. As a result of all of this, they're travellin, travellin', travellin', trying to track down their father as well as whatever demonic force did this to the women in their lives.
Admittedly, the world is not exactly short of TV shows based on fantasy and science fiction right now. The case in favour of Supernatural, however, is primarily centred around the two lead actors, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. If you don't believe us, just take a gander up a couple of paragraphs at the pretty, pretty picture. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise us their collective smouldering power somehow led to all those nasty cases of spontaneous combustion. The brothers Winchester are decidedly hot, and the two of them have led us to think all manner of sick, wrong and positively incestuous thoughts. (Sorry for that overshare.) The new episodes are airing on ITV2 on Sundays, but if you missed that or don't have digital TV, now's your time to catch up and swoon. Swoon!
