DIET HARD! You Are What You Eat Special: Michelle McManus, Channel 4, 8.00pm
It takes an awful lot to get us excited about any programme involving the dreaded "Doctor" Gillian McKeith. She’s so dull and macrobiotic and humourless that no matter how much she tells us that lentils and mung beans will add ten years to our lifespan, we can’t help thinking that if those ten years are going to be spent with people as horrifyingly smug as her, we’d rather die as soon as possible. However, as soon as we heard tell of this programme late last year, we knew it was going to be must-see TV. Former Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus opens her fridge (and quite possibly her colon) to Gillian, whilst maintaining that she’d never lose weight for the sake of her career. Newsflash: Michelle, what little career you’ve managed thus far is entirely because of your weight, and certainly not your singing voice, so that’s quite a smart decision on your part. Well done. However, she would like to lose some weight for the benefit of her health, so thus Gillian is beckoned. And apparently Michelle isn’t eating enough food. Say what now? Well, it will all be explained during the show, apparently.

I thought Michelle came across really well, whereas Dr McK was her usual spiteful, bullying, hump-backed, wizened self. She's in her early 40s, apparently!!

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
