Beeny babe
MAKEOVER! Sarah Beeny's Streets Ahead, Channel 4, 8.00pm
Tuesdays without a Sarah Beeny programme showing at 8pm on Channel 4 are always a little bit wrong for us somehow, like springtime without rain or Mary-Kate without Ashley. There's still no new Property Ladder, sadly, but we do have this cheeky little number which we like to think of as The Beeny's little side project. You know, if she were in an indie band, this would be her less-commercial but not entirely uninteresting part-time band that she's always really excited to talk about in interviews because it makes her look hardcore. Have we stretched this metaphor to breaking point already? Yes? Great.
From what we remember of this series the last time it was on, we found it ever so slightly underwhelming in comparison to Famous Original Beeny Project. The general thread of the whole thing, for the uninitiated, is that The Beeny visits a street somewhere in the UK and tries to persuade all the residents to club together to do some mutual renovation across the whole road in the hope of increasing everybody's house prices. Sounds like an unbelievably stressful and possibly pointless endeavour? Yep, that's what we thought. And there's generally somebody who obstructs the whole process having initially said that they'd be happy to take part, but there'd be no fun in the world if that didn't happen, right?
In fairness, this isn't usually as entertaining as Property Ladder because it lacks one of the key ingredients: clueless would-be property magnates who think that you can easily make a quick buck off a dilapidated old council flat by replacing the kitchen cupboards and stricking a hot tub in the bathroom. The presence of The Beeny is always a definite plus point, and this programme is the perfect showcase for her world-class negotiation and diplomacy skills. It's just a shame the end result, while often quite pretty and practical, is never all that satisfying. That said, any form of Beeny on a Tuesday is better than none.
