Laughter is the best medicine
MEDICS! Green Wing, Channel 4, 9.00pm
We can only apologise for using such a trite headline to introduce one of the more innovative comedies of recent years. It seems like an age since the groundbreaking first series, but we're not going to dwell on counting the days, we're just going to be happy to have our beloved Green Wing back on our screens. We left the series on a literal cliffhanger, as an ambulance containing (we think, but it has been AGES) Mac, Guy and Martin perched precariously on the edge of a cliff somewhere far, far away. Obviously we're not going to post any spoilers regarding who survives, but judging by the people present in the pre-series promotional campaign, it seems unlikely there will be any fatalities from the main cast.
So, back are all of the usual offenders: dazed but well-meaning Dr Caroline and her on-off relationship with Dr "Mac" McCartney. No doubt Mac will return to his continued petty games of one-upmanship with Guy Secretan (who may or may not be on the phone to Zurich at any given point), who in turn will delight in humiliating poor old hopeless Martin. Boyce will be continuing to torment Dr Statham, who will continue to lust after Joanna Clore, who will continue to have an office full of playful admin staff including Naughty Rachel and Harriet "Mumsy" Schulenberg. And, of course, our personal favourite, the delightful Staff Liaison Officer Sue White, perpetrator of such homespun wisdom as "here's a pamphlet on dealing with difficult people, now fuck off" and who memorably screamed "No! Not her! She hasn't got a fanny!" of Dr Caroline.
We have no idea what the actual plots are going to be like, but from what we saw of the last series, it doesn't really matter that much - let's just enjoy the bizarre comedy asides and the generous helping of slapstick. Green Wing is back - hooray!
