FESTIVE
There are lots of little things to surprise and delight people who are in Istanbul for Eurovision (the comedy money, cheating taxi drivers and lack of seatbelts in cars when everyone on the road seems determined to kill and/or maim notwithstanding).
People in Turkey seem genuinely delighted to be hosting the contest, and nearly everyone we’ve met has been keen to chat for a while about their favourite songs (Greece’s Shake It is a big hit here – mainly, it seems, because you can do a little dance where you wriggle your arse to it).
Our favourite little detail, though, is that all the main roads Istanbul have been decked out in festive Eurovision bunting. Looking at the pretty red flags fluttering gaily in the breeze certainly gives something to focus your mind on while you’re clinging on to the seat for dear life while your driver tries to avoid a man on foot pulling a big cart full of Christmas trees down the outside lane.
