RETRO! Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, ITV2, 7.00pm

Lois and ClarkWe were infinitely grateful to ITV2 last week during the heatwave; when we got in from work and wanted nothing more than to flop on the sofa in front of the idiot box and complain about the humidity, they made sure we actually had something we wanted to watch by stripping reruns of the cheese-tastic Lois and Clark on weekday evenings. Not only did it provide us with entertainment, but it also gave us a chance to remember the times we used to watch it on Saturday mornings before Live and Kicking and take a little trip down memory lane.

We'll admit this much: in the early episodes, the special effects are utterly appalling (though still not as bad as some of the special effects in season eight of Charmed - did anyone SEE 'Malice in Wonderland'? Shudder), especially when the footage suddenly looks as though it's been shot through three feet of gauze curtains while they do the green-screening. It's also every bit as cheesy as you probably remember it. However, we managed to overlook all of that and focus on how much everyone involved looks like they're having fun, how Teri Hatcher was a brilliant Lois Lane (and how she used to actually look like a real person), and how Dean Cain has some SERIOUS arms going on there. Yowza.

The diehard fans may be interested to note that we're still on the first season, where Jimmy Olsen was still played by Michael Landes before he got fired for looking too much like Dean Cain (and we really don't get that - yes, they've both got the dark-haired pretty boy thing going on, but it's never exactly complicated to work out which one's Jimmy and which one's Clark) and replaced by Justin Whalin, and so everything still has that shiny new feeling about it. Er, except now it's more of a shiny old feeling. Whatever. All we know is that we're quite enjoying this being on in the evenings, and long may it continue.

Michael Landes was a much hotter Jimmy. It was so nice to see him turn up in 'Love Soup' all those years later, looking very, very good indeed.

Mm, I bought the two available seasons of this from Amazon the other day. I've been wasting many hours watching it :[ It's SO AMAZING.

lost boy, get hold of a series called "Special Unit 2" if you can, for plenty of Michael Landes action.

i loved this show when it was on - the third season is by far the best. lots of people hated the clone wedding storyline, but apart from the ridiculous ending to it, it rocked :)

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
