FIERCE! Britain's Next Top Model, Living TV, 8.00pm

Britain's Next Top ModelLet's get this out of the way from the beginning: the first series of Britain's Next Top Model left a lot to be desired. Several of the girls weren't fit to be FHM's High Street Honeys, much less haute couture. Lisa Butcher had all the charisma of a beige pashmina. The judging panel "set" looked like it had been knocked up by a couple of kids on work experience in three hours with a £10 budget and an unlimited supply of tinfoil. Janice Dickinson was absolutely nowhere to be seen. Nobody poured beer in another bitch's weave. Nobody was half-blind or had lupus or caught a flesh-eating virus or...okay, perhaps we were expecting too much.

What pleases us about the second series is that they seem to be aware of some of these faults, at least, and have made attempts to fix them. This time around the host is Lisa Snowdon, who we have at least HEARD of previously, so that's something. The new crop of contests look, on a superficial level at least, far more capable of being models than the last lot (have a look here if you're curious, but beware spoilers etc.), most of whom could hold their heads up high against the various casts of ANTM (especially cycle six - have you seen those dog-faced bitches?) - and one of them is Peter Crouch's ex, which should provide plenty of in-house scandal. And we don't know who she is yet, but new judge Paula Hamilton could, from the sound of her bio, be an excellent ersatz Janice. Whether they've replaced that woeful judging "set" (we really can't let those sarcastic quotation marks go, can we?) remains to be seen, but otherwise we're quite excited.

...except we still can't get Living TV where we live. We don't encourage piracy of any kind, obviously, but there'd better be clips on YouTube at the very least, for crying out loud.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
