DRAMA! Shiny Shiny Bright New Hole In My Heart, BBC2, 9.00pm

We remember first hearing about this show ages ago, and we've been waiting anxiously for it to turn up on our screens ever since. Why? Because it marries two of our very favourite things - shopping, and Daniela Nardini. Being the enormous This Life geeks that we were-slash-are, it's always exciting when a member of the cast who isn't Jack Davenport or Andrew Lincoln turns up on our screens again (and nothing against those two, but the rest of the cast are less ubiquitous, aren't they?).

Moving on to the subject at hand, Daniela Nardini plays Maya, a wealthy client of a posh Manchester department store, who's assigned a staff member called Nathalie as her personal shopper. Nathalie begins to covet Maya's glamorous lifestyle and, without wanting to be all OMG spoilers, starts spending money that she doesn't have on things she can't afford in an attempt to emulate this swish stranger. The press bumph notes that a lot of the script was improvised, and the show was filmed in Manchester's Trafford Centre amongst regular everyday people-like-you. Cooeee, although really we just want to know if it's any good.

We don't know, of course, because we don't have the luxury of a preview screening, but given the sheer length of time we've been looking forward to this one, we'll be very disappointed if it isn't.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
