LOVE! Chantelle's Dream Dates, E4, 10.00pm

We've said this before, but we're decidedly uncomfortable with the concept of Chantelle the Actual Celebrity. The entire brilliance of her winning Celebrity Big Brother revolved around her being the fake non-celebrity put in there to fool the others, and ended up being so much less appalling than all of the real famous people that the voting public decided she ought to win. If she'd gone on from that and decided that she'd had enough of this fame lark and was quite content to go back to working in Homebase, it would have officially been the best thing to happen ever, and we would have applauded the entire universe for allowing this to happen. Sadly we were crediting humanity with a bit too much common sense, and now Heat magazine is extremely interested in the colour of Chantelle's bra when she goes to the shops.

So, what next for Chantelle? Well, in the time-honoured fashion of "we've got this big name who's riding a temporary wave of minor celebrity, we want to use them but we don't really have a clue how to", the powers that be at E4 have given her a dating show. (See also: Danan, Paul; Dowling, Brian; and probably a whole host of other unfortunates). The basic premise being that Chantelle sets off on the streets (no, not like THAT, even if she did previously earn a living as a Paris Hilton lookalike) to find desperate women and give them the chance of a perfect date. Presumably one of the options presented to them is "go on a reality TV show and ensnare the lead singer of a C-list ska revival band".

It all sounds horrible and we're not even going to pretend for a second that we approve, but we're sure that some people are going to absolutely lap it up, so have at it.

Why don't they just bring the proper 'Street Mate' back rather than flood the TV with all of these low-rent doppelganagers? It was a good format and I'm sure even Chantelle couldn't have made a balls-up of that.

I know the man that directs this!

I used to work at Homebase, and as someone who used to work at Homebase I can confidently state that Cantelle would NEVER have cut it at Homebase (but she would probably have been sexually harrassed quite a lot).

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
