POP! Boys Will Be Girls/Girls Aloud: Off The Record, E4, 10.00pm

Every so often a TV idea comes along that makes us think that the world cannot possibly sink any lower. Normally this is a time for celebrating at LOWCULTURE towers, as televisual troughs pretty much make up our staple diet. However, there are some things that even leave us thinking "wow, you really must have no self-respect remaining if you want to do that". And it isn't even time for Big Brother again. No, it's the advent of new reality-cum-comedy-cum-talent-show-cum-drama-cum-we-don't-really-know-what-the-hell-it-is programme Boys Will Be Girls.

You've all seen the adverts, we're sure. The basic premise involves two music mogels (Nathan Moore and Olivier Bezardi) taking a bunch of failed boyband stars and giving them one more chance for pop superstardom...as a girl group. Hilarious, isn't it? So they SHAVE THEIR LEGS and WEAR DRESSES and the whole thing is just so funny that you'll probably HAVE A SEIZURE. Hmmm, sarcasm is unbecoming on us. This does actually sound like the most inane and offensive idea for a TV show ever, and yet...we still kind of want to know what happens. Damn you, E4.

If you'd prefer the actual real thing with real proper girls, then Girls Aloud: Off The Record is probably more up your street. This follows proper actual girl group featuring proper actual girls Girls Aloud backstage as they go about the day-to-day business of being a top girlgroup. (This is probably what the contestants on the other show will be given for homework.) In the opening episode we're promised frank discussions about the girls not getting a Brit nomination, and Cheryl making an apparently hilarious faux pas involving Amelle from the Sugababes. This is more like it.

(And yes, just to clarify, that's definitely the real Girls Aloud in the picture, not the other lot. None of you even questioned that...right?)

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
