Brian's back!

HELLO CALLER! The Mint, ITV1, Midnight

Never mind this year's BIG BROTHER winner – we're much more excited about what one of the previous victors is up to. Yes, we're talking about our old friend Brian Dowling, who can now be seen on ITV's frankly astonishing late-night phone-in quiz, THE MINT.

LOWCULTURE stumbled upon this televisual treat for the first time last week, and we were so thrilled that we couldn't bear to turn the telly off until gone 2am. The format is simple (idiots phone in and get really simple questions wrong), but our Brian makes the whole thing fabulously watchable with a winning mix of faux drama and high camp. We're also big fans of his comedy female straight man, Beverley French – a brassy Manchester lass who takes no shit off her useless callers.

The only slight disappointment we suffered while watching it was that Brian was endlessly enthusing about the presence of Lesley Joseph as their special studio guest - but they spent too much time fannying about with the idiot punters so we didn't get to see her before lights out. Boo!

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
