Veronica Mars, Living TV, 8.00pm

Life on MarsOkay, we're aware that our previous two features ran a little long, so we're going to cut this one down a bit and barely deal with the main plot. Why? Because it doesn't really have any relevance to the season mysteries of the bus crash or the murder of Felix, and basically serves as a mirror for Veronica's paranoid fantasies about what Duncan's not telling her. That's not to say it wasn't entertaining or well-plotted, but if you're tuning in just to keep up with the season arc, you don't need to know any more about it.

Previously on Veronica Mars: bus go wheeeee off cliff, Veronica feels responsible - especially when Curly Moran washes up on the beach with Veronica's name on his hand, and Veronica discovers that he was the stunt co-ordinator for one of Aaron Echolls's movies, thereby fuelling Veronica's fears that all those people died due to a botched attempt on Veronica's own life. Meanwhile, Veronica caught Jackie dating someone who wasn't Wallace, and Keith and Alicia encountered a sinister cop in Chicago. Also, Duncan and Logan sort of kissed and made up, and Large Penis Casablancas ran out on his family, but neither of those storylines were dealt with in episode four, so just keep them in mind for later.

So, episode four. A crazy girlfriend wanted Veronica to spy on her boyfriend, and this is the bit we don't need to talk about, suffice to say that Veronica still isn't technically working at Mars Investigations anymore, and Keith refused to take the case, so Veronica took it behind his back because she had enormous dollar-signs in her eyes after Julie Crazy Lady basically wrote her a blank cheque. Oh, Veronica. It's good to know you're shallow like us.

Sinister Cop drove past Alicia's house, and Alicia was suitably spooked, so she asked Keith to borrow a gun. Keith refused to lend her a weapon, responsible type that he is, but promised that he'd guard Alicia's house for her. Alicia identified sinister cop as Carl Morgan, a man who she dated 20 years ago, before she got married. Keith spotted Carl stalking around Alicia's house and politely suggested that he get the hell out of there before Keith caused him a whole world of pain (and let's face it - Keith may not look in the peak of physical fitness, but we wouldn't want to be on his bad side). Morgan simply said that Alicia had something of his, and walked away.

A guilt-ridden Veronica went to visit Meg at the hospital, and was surprised to see Duncan there. In turn, the Manning family were surprised to see both of them there, since Duncan is there "every day" and they've repeatedly informed him that he is not welcome. Veronica's mind began whirring, because Duncan had kept his visits a secret from her. Meanwhile, Keith took Carl Morgan's picture in to Lamb, identified him as a drug dealer, and suggested that Lamb might wish to do his sheriffly duties and arrest the guy. Keep living that dream, Keith.

VDIn school, Weevil questioned Veronica about her having been questioned by Lamb in the previous episode. Veronica noticed his new earring and flashed back to the earring that Lamb showed her, found at the last place Curly Moran was seen alive. Weevil admitted he got a call saying that Curly Moran was behind the bus crash, and that he'd been hired by local crime lords and all round shady characters the Fitzpatricks (pay attention - this might be on the test). Apparently, deceased PCH-er Cervando had hustled some cash out of them, but Weevil said that the bus crash wasn't the Fitzpatricks' MO - they would've just kneecapped him in an alley somewhere, since his hustle was small potatoes.

Back to the Plot Which Is Not Being Discussed, a small point of relevance is that Veronica called Wallace away from an afternoon of macking on Jackie to help her with the sting. Jackie became extremely chagrined by this, and the lines were drawn for the inevitable Bitchy Battle of Jackie and Veronica. Veronica told Wallace about the random guy she saw Jackie with, but he wasn't bothered - Wallace is totally into Jackie, y'all.

That night, since Keith was still babysitting Alicia's house, Veronica went to the Neptune Grand for further Donut Sex, but made the mistake of asking Duncan why he hadn't told her about visiting Meg. Duncan clammed up, and nookie was off the agenda for the evening. Just as well: at 2AM, Meg's little sister Lizzie came knocking on the door with Meg's laptop. It was in Meg's locker at school and would be collected by their parents the next day. Meg's parents, as we saw in season one, care little for privacy and Lizzie wanted Duncan's help getting Meg's personal e-mails off it before they came to collect it. Duncan, despite being the heir to the Kane Software fortune, knew nothing about computers, so Scarlet Woman Veronica (after being discovered hiding in the bedroom) called Mac, who downloaded the files onto a Jump drive. Veronica later debated downloading Meg's e-mails to find out what Duncan's secret was, after he left the drive unattended, but a call from Crazy Plot We're Not Discussing brought her to her senses.

An unhappy Lamb clamped Keith's car in revenge, after discovering that Carl Morgan is actually well-respected Chicago detective Nathan Woods. Keith was somewhat verklempt, and began digging into Alicia's past where she was a lady of mystery with many different names. Keith also discovered Veronica working on the Non-Discussed Plot, and reminded her that she's not as clever as she thinks she is, and can't keep sneaking around behind his back. He also displayed further mad detective skillz by revealing that he knew about the Donut Sex at the Neptune Grand. Again, pay attention: Veronica's sense of personal invincibility and lack of remorse will surely come back to bite her in the ass before the season's end. That said, Keith re-hires her to work back at Mars Investigations, but just for a little light research and filing. Like we said, Keith: keep living that dream.

Veronica discovered that the anonymous call to Weevil came from the Echolls estate and accosted Logan. Logan, none too happy to be accused of yet another crime by his relentless ex-girlfriend, pointed out that he had no idea who Curly Moran was, and that he'd been holding a party the night of the call, so it could've been made by anyone in the 09er crowd. And that was all we got of Logan for this episode - boo! And finally, Nathan Woods arrived to see Wallace and announced, in his best Darth Vader impression, that he is Wallace's father. Dramatic fanfare!

This week: could there be a truce in the offing after Jackie needs Veronica's help in a credit card scam? Don't bet on it. Also, Wallace comes to terms with the sudden reappearance of his father, and Veronica makes another shocking discovery about the bus crash. (Yes, we know this feature was still obscenely long. Just be glad we didn't write about the crazy girlfriend plot, yes?)

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
