On the beat
COPS! Feel The Force, BBC2, 9.30pm
Wheee, it's a new sitcom! New sitcoms give us quite the heady feeling, as though the world is full of possibility, candy canes, rainbows and lollipops. Of course, that feeling soon evaporates after we've watched the first episode of most of the wretchedly unfunny shit that gets forced on us, but what can we say? We're gluttons for punishment.
That said, we've got high hopes for this one due to the calibre of the talent involved. It stars Rosie Cavaliero (whom you might have seen in any number of shows including Green Wing, Spoons and Peep Show) and Michelle Gomez (whom we hope you'll recognise from her scene-stealing turn as the brilliant Sue White in Green Wing) as decidedly inept coppers Sally Frank and Sally Bobbins, respectively. It's written by Georgia Pritchett, who's been involved in writing Smack The Pony, LA 7 (and its many variants) and, most excitingly of all, the sadly all-too-obscure 1996 Jane Horrocks vehicle Never Mind The Horrocks, which is quite possibly our favourite TV show in the history of ever (and if anyone knows anywhere it's likely to be repeated, or somewhere other that you can get hold of it, do tell us). And it's directed by Tristram Shapeero, of pretty much every brilliant sitcom ever (and a few duff ones, but them's the breaks) fame.
Sadly we've not seen any of it yet (boo!), so this could all be a hideous disappointment, but there's a pleasingly old-skool air to the idea (lots of whistle-blowing and running inexpertly after things will be involved, we hope) and we feel certain that anything involving the brilliant Michelle Gomez can't be a complete waste of our time and yours.
