GANGLAND! Suburban Shootout, Five, 11.00pm

Channel Five and comedy are not exactly two things you associate with each other very closely. They've done well with classy US drama acquisitions, documentaries, gameshows, and most other genres (we'll give them a pass on soaps for screening Home and Away even if things didn't quite work out for Family Affairs), but comedy hasn't really been a strong point. And yes, we do know about Joey and Two And A Half Men. Hence our point.

With any luck, though, this might change all that. Described at first as the British answer to Desperate Housewives (although the gender and approximate age of the main characters seems to be all that the two shows have in common), this show is set in the quaint village of Little Stempington, where the peace and quiet of respectable suburban life is actually a cover for some kind of terrifying turf war run by the local ladies. Kind of the world you imagine Bridget Jones's mum might have lived in if she weren't trapped by the constraints of ordinary British etiquette - gunning down the neighbours for daring to suggest that you might need to sieve the gravy, or similar.

It's been commissioned with the Paramount Comedy Channel and there are some top comedy names on board (Anna Chancellor, Felicity Montagu, Amelia Bullmore, Emma Kennedy) so we've got high hopes for this one. The trailers have done a great job of making it look awesome, so let's hope the show itself lives up to it.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
