Quite how this one slipped under the lowculture radar, I'm not sure. It may have had something to do with the fact that it appeared in the run-up to Christmas, when the various members of the team were preoccupied with such matters as dressing up as 'indie' popstars or getting semi-naked and commandeering hot tubs at 2 in the morning.
Anyhow, this is the first trailer to appear for Mamma Mia!, the film-of-the-musical-of-the-songs-of-ABBA. We all know the story of the girl living on a Greek island who needs to find out which of her mother's three ex-lovers is her real father, with the help of the lyrics of Björn and Benny. A quite amazing cast, with Meryl Streep in what will surely be the defining role of her career as the mother, Donna, also features Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and (a lovely nod to ABBA's homeland) Stellan Skarsgård. And then, just in case that isn't enough, they've thrown in Julie Walters and Christine Baranski for good measure.
Possibly one of the lowculture highlights of this year will be in cinemas this summer.
Here's the trailer - the moments at 0:53 and 0:57 are simply Merylvellous.

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses.
We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
