Spy Vs. Spy
ESPIONAGE! Spooks, BBC1, 9.00pm
Phew! We're positively out of breath already from the return of our favourite glossy spy drama. In last night's episode, lots of very clever people said lots of very clever things that we didn't entirely follow the whole way through, but we managed to discern the following: rumours of a foreign terror threat are starting to discredit the government, except the threat is not foreign at all - it's actually being orchestrated by a group of top-ranking businessmen and politicians (one of whom is MI6 agent Ros's father) who want to overthrow the government.
We got to the final moments of episode one, having already seen Colin get murdered by a couple of shady types in some remote woodlands (and we'd like to go out on a limb - no pun intended - here and say that death by hanging would not be our way of choice, ever), witnessing the agents narrowly escape death for what must have been like the one billiontieth time that day alone, thanks to a text message sent by Ros in the nick of time, and watching as two passenger aeroplanes were diverted onto a collision course with each other right above London.
It was all impossibly slick, and there were a number of moments that threatened to veer into cheese but were played just knowingly enough to stay on course. And the best part was, we were on tenterhooks the entire time. Marvellous. Can't wait for tonight's episode.

I think Spooks is rubbish, a 24 rip-off that tries so hard to be cool that it forgets coherent storytelling.
