HOW PREDICTABLE, THEY'VE CHOSEN The Line Of Beauty, BBC2, 9pm

If there's one thing guaranteed to get LOWCULTURE frothing at the gusset, it's the prospect of some good, old-fashioned man-on-man action on our television – especially since we upgraded to widescreen.

In THE LINE OF BEAUTY we are promised some of the most explicit gay sex scenes ever seen on UK TV – although it is safe to assume this does not include TVs in the UK which have ever had any of the nine volumes of Bel Ami's Personal Trainers series played on them.

Anyway, you'll want to know about the plot, won't you? OK. Love, sex class ... blah, blah, blah ... social elite ... blah, blah, blah ... richly textured coming-of-age story ... blah, blah, blah ... lots of bumming. Guess which bit of that wasn't from the official BBC press release?

Director Saul Dibb was interviewed in London's Evening Standard recently, and said of the gay sex scenes that his "biggest concern what that people might feel we were ducking it." Which is ALMOST the same as our biggest concern, but not quite.

Did we mention there's bumming in it? We did? Yes? Well that's all right then.

UPDATE: It now transpires that this may only feature the most explicit gay sex scenes ever seen on the BBC, which is not really the same thing at all. Boo!

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
