Blasts from the past

Today is a glorious day in the world of LOWCULTURE, as two of our much-loved but greatly-undercelebrated icons make rare television appearances.

First up we have DOCTORS (BBC1, 2.05pm) which, apparently, last week featured a gripping sub-plot about a misplaced pterodactyl. Well how the fuck did we miss THAT one? Hopefully things will be a bit more exciting today, with the appearance of the mighty Liza Goddard – although the storyline is the usual tosh about two women having some really boring secret, so don't get your hopes up. So what if Liza was only the second-best female captain on GIVE US A CLUE (Una Stubbs remains firmly at the top of that particular heap)? It's still great to see her.

Later, we have Beatrice Elliot herself, aka actress Stella Gonet, popping up in THE INSPECTOR LYNLEY MYSTERIES (BBC1, 7.30pm). Lord knows what she's doing in it, of course – we can't be bothered to investigate any further, knowing that it can never be as exciting as a clash with Evangeline over whether to remain exclusively devoted to haute couture or start dabbling with a more downmarket Prêt-a-porter collection.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
